Fowey Lifeboats; 150 Years of Gallantry
The coastline of Cornwall has a reputation for being one of the most treacherous in Britain. Today it is protected by a fleet of modern, fast and sophisticated rescue craft, operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution which is funded by voluntary contributions.
ISO years ago the RNLI established a lifeboat station at Polkerris, a small village on the county's south coast. In the 1920s the station's operations were moved to neighbouring Fowey, a small picturesque town and one of the busiest ports in the country.A motor lifeboat first entered service here in 1928, and in 1995 an inshore lifeboat was delivered to compliment the all-weather lifeboat.
Ready to battle against the elements in times of need, the volunteer crews and their lifeboats have undertaken many courageous and difficult rescues.Today, the station operates two of the most modern lifeboats, a 14m Trent and a D class inflatable inshore lifeboat, which are ready to put to sea to help others in distress.
This book tells the history of the lifeboats that have served at Fowey and Polkerris. Many rescues are described, with some outstanding colour images helping to tell the story.

The volunteer lifeboat crews of Sheringham have been putting to sea to help those in peril for more than 170 years, and this book provides a comprehensive account of the station's history and development. It tells the story of the town's lifeboats and lifeboat crews, as well as covering the unique collection of preserved lifeboats.
The first lifeboats at Sheringham date from the 1830s, when a private, locally-funded, boat named Augusta was provided for the use of the fishermen. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution got involved in the station's operation in 1867, and three pulling lifeboats served until 1936.
In 1936 the first motor lifeboat, Foresters' Centenary, was sent to the station and she served for twenty-five years, achieving a magnificent service record and saving eighty-two lives. She undertook the station's most notable rescue when, on 31 October 1956, her crew, led by Coxswain Henry 'Downtide' West, saved eighteen men from the steamship Wimbledon in very heavy seas.
The Oakley lifeboat The Manchester Unity of Oddfellows served until the early 1990s, since when fast rigid-inflatable Atlantic lifeboats have been operated. The latest lifeboat at Sheringham, the Atlantic 85 class The Oddfellows, arrived in July 2007 and was named on 15 September 2007.
This book provides a complete record of the Sheringham lifeboats, and contains many original unpublished images.

The coxswains and crews who have manned the Cromer lifeboat have a record of gallantry second to none, and are famous for their daring rescues and lifesaving exploits. The most famous figure in the station's history is Coxswain Henry Blogg, unique for being awarded the RNLI's Gold Medal three times.
His feats and those of the crews before and after him are recounted in this highly original pictorial book that includes hundreds of previously unpublished photographs and recounts the station's most famous rescues.
Today's lifeboat crew continues the tradition of rescue at sea with the new high-tech 25-knotTamar lifeboat bringing a new dimension to sea rescue for Cromer's famous lifeboat station.
